Unfortunately Sara’s 2015 grass season as well as her stay at the All England Lawn Tennis Club of Wimbledon end today by Aleksandra Krunic.
The young Serbian – class of ’93 – WTA n.82 turned out to be a very dangerous opponent on this particular surface since she kicked out both former doubles partner and veteran Roberta Vinci and Cichi herself in 3 sets.
Sara seemed to be off a good start, immediately putting the pedal to the medal to take a 3-0 lead but her engine jammed for some reason: Krunic suddenly transformed into a robot making 0 unforced errors and acing her way through the first set with a 6 consecutive games streak. Leaving the collapse behind, the n.1 Italian seed shaked herself up and started to strive to level the match (4-3) but the Serbian sensed the risk of 3rd set and made every effort to avoid an open clash with one of the most dangerous fighters of the ranking. And just right as she feared, Sara didn’t miss the chance to shine with a 25-shots rally at 2-1 in the tie-break to be even.
Nobody expected such a run from Krunic and it is with regret that Sara had to test it today on court. Her recovery capabilities were still unknown, nevertheless they allowed her getting back to robot-mode and close the match. Final score: 3-6, 7-6, 2-6.
Nevertheless, this is the best performance on grass since 2012 for Sara, considering a 2nd round here in Wimbledon and a 3rd one back in Eastbourne.
Cichi will now take a few days off before getting back to her beloved clay at the Bucharest WTA International tournament.
