First of all, apologies for the lack of updates during the US Open. However, while we were away, Sara had a really good tournament in New York. She made the quarterfinal, her 2nd Grand Slam quarterfinal this year, and the first time since 2012 that she made the second week of a Slam other than at Roland Garros. In the quarterfinal Sara lost to eventual finalist Caroline Wozniacki.
No doubt the most special win of the tournament was the 3rd round, where Sara beat 7-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams. It was a special match, with a very special scoreline. Sara won the first set 6-0, and lost the second set with the same scoreline. After these two sets where the winner of the set didn’t lose a game, the third set was the complete opposite. It was very close and in the end a tiebreak had to decide the winner of the match. Sara won the tie-break 7-5 and hence also the match: 6-0, 0-6, 7-6 (5).
Because of her good tournament at the US Open, Sara moved up to #12 in the WTA rankings this week, and she’s once again the best Italian in the ranking.
Of course you can find all the pictures from the US Open in our photogallery.
Sara’s next tournament will be the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week.
