“Tennis means fighting and having fun to the bone” quote: Sara Errani.
Unfortunately for our Sara it has not been that fun to play today’s match on the Grandstand Arena since a bad flu took over her body. The cause is said to be the critical outdoor/indoor temperature range.
“I didn’t feel fine last night, my throat started to get sore and my head was haching a lot. I probably got fever as well, but I will check it later in the hotel. I guess it was because of the AC. It is everywhere. It is burning hot outside and when you get back in the locker rooms, all sweating, you feel freezing cold. Everybody has this very same condition, of course, but it is hard to avoid it anyways. There are too many changes of temperature.”
Following the baby Japanese Mayo Hibi who ended up with a tough loss in 1R (6-0, 6-1) another young player tried to jeopardize Sara’s road to victory this morning: Jelena Ostapenko – n.114 in world rankings – is not the type of youngster to underestimate. Also, imagine if our warrior did step into the court feeling that way. Sarita could barely move during the first set, as the score table was showing:
“I quite could not find the way and the strength to react, I was feeling too dizzy, but then she managed to put me back in the match with a few unforced errors. Honestly? Yes, I probably would have retired from the game if she hadn’t made those errors in the beginning of the second set. I was feeling a little bit better but it was only an energy wave, I started to feel so bad again right after it, I was constantly down after a 3-shots rally and such. I don’t know how I made it myself! I hope I will able to recover as soon as possible.“
Indeed, our Sara Errani will have to recover as soon as possible, as her next opponent to contend her a spot into the 2015 US Open’s best-16 will be an all-time tough one for the Italian:
“No doubt it will be a tough match, she’s been playing well here. Sam is one of the beste player around, she has got both a strong serve and forehand but at the same time she might leave something behind her. I would have to force her playing more on the backhand.”
Here the highlights of the match in full HD (Errani v. Ostapenko) for those who could not make it to see it live on Eurosport2:
Due to Sara’s needs to recover in order to play both singles and doubles – along with her partner Fabio Fognini – she had to withdraw from Mixed Doubles draw.
