Acapulco 2012: Sara takes it all!

Mexican Open womens final

Sara has won both the singles and doubles title in Acapulco! She’s the first player to win both titles at the same tournament in almost two years.

The singles final against Flavia Pennetta was very tough. They both started out nervously, and the first seven games all were breaks. In total, there were 9 breaks in 12 games in the first set, but eventually, Pennetta managed to hold serve while serving at 6-5, and won the set 7-5. In the second set, there were ‘only’ 2 breaks each, but as neither could take an advantage, it went to a tiebreak. Sara took the first 5 points in the tiebreak and never gave that lead away: she took the tie-break 7-2 and the set 7-6. The first two sets had taken nearly 2 hours, and had taken a lot of the players. Sara started the third set well, while Pennetta was really tired, and as a result, the set went quick: 6-0 to Sara, to win the trophy!

After winning Palermo and Portoroz back to back in 2008, this is Sara’s 3rd title in singles. With this title, Sara is eligible for the Tournament of Champions, held in Sofia at the end of the season, and she moves up in the rankings to 31, equalling her best ranking.

Shortly after the singles final, Sara and Roberta played the doubles final, and they won that easily: 6-2, 6-1 over Dominguez Lino/Parra Santonja. After Monterrey last week, it’s their second title in two weeks (and their 7th title together). It’s Sara’s 10th doubles title in total.
