Madrid 2011: Two losses to Schiavone

Sara is out of the tournament, after she lost twice in two days to Francesca Schiavone. Yesterday, Sara and Roberta Vinci started really well in the doubles match, going 6-1, 3-0 up, but then Schiavone and Stosur (who apparently played quite bad in the first set) started making less errors, and the second set got really close. In the end, Stosur and Schiavone took the set 7-5, and then went on to win the match tie-break 10-5.

The singles match just finished, and it was a tough one. This time it was Schiavone who started well, blowing Sara away in the first set and taking it 6-0. The second set went on serve for 4 games, but then Sara won the next 4, to win the set 6-2. The third set was closer; Schiavone went up a break for 4-1, but Sara came back to 4-3. Then, there was a really long service game for Sara, with some deuces, and gamepoints for both, but Schiavone took the 4th breakpoint she had in the game and then served out the match: 6-0 2-6 6-3. Despite the loss, we think there are a lot of positives in this match for Sara. She won a set against the reigning Roland Garros champion, and kept fighting even after she got broken in the third set.

Next week, Sara will play the tournament in Rome, which is always important for the Italian players.
