Definitively a nice way to start her hard court summer, as our Sara Errani takes her payback over Kristina Mladenovic in 1R of the Rogers Cup 2015.
The n.15 seeded of the Canadian main draw picked one of the most dangerous opponents: in fact, the French player – WTA’s n.38 – inflicted a bad loss on the best-ranked Italian as national representant in Federation Cup’s 1R, held in Genoa on indoor clay.
The match – originally scheduled yesterday on Centre Court – had to be postponed at 1-1 due to a rain storm that forced the early stop. The game resumed this morning on Grandstand, as Errani e Mladenovic both gave the fans their best shot: after a break-counter break streak, Sara seemed to find the right spot to offend and get the chance to serve for the first set (5-4). Unfortunately, the French broke back again but paid this success way too much as – when and how was not really evident – she started feel some kind of bother to her right ankle.
Anyway, once checked the ankle with the physio, Mladenovic got regularly back to play but still did not reckon without out host, as Sarita was already skipping on court even before the umpire called the restart. The n.16-ranked stepped her game up to a whole other level (see the stats below) and finally took control of the match. Final score: 5-7, 6-1, 6-0.
Brilliant tennis and brilliant win for our Sarita, who will take on Madison Brengle (WTA’s n.43) in 2R tomorrow (Court 2 starting from 11am local time). Following up after suitable rest as 3rd match, the new/old couple Errani/Pennetta will face Barthel/Minella, due to Kudryavtseva/Pavlyuchenkova withdrawal.
