Stuttgart 2015: Quarterfinals

After the stunning success against Agnieszka Radwanska, Sarita moved forward into the last-16 round  over Zarina Diyas, WTA’s n.32, with a final score 6-4, 6-1.

Definitevely a brilliant performance on Stuttgart’s indoor clay by Sarita: consistency and versatility were her best weapons. Indeed, since from the beginning of the first set, Sara kept a firm grip on every rally, breaking her opponent serve 5 times to end the set 6-4. Cichi’s grip became even firmer on Diyas’ racquet within the second set, 6-1.

We all knew quarterfinals against Simona Halep would have a major combat in store for us, since there might be a reason for the WTA n.3’s best match record of the year thus far – 26 on 29 – and most tournaments won (Shenzen, Dubai ed Indian Wells). Unfortunately for Sara, the her winning streak continued after a close 6-4, 6-4.

The lack of fresh energies probably made the difference this time, for Sara played almost every week in the past 3 months. It was a huge fight for every inch of the court since the beginning. The audience enjoyed the players forcing each other’s serve to get multiple consecutive breaks, nevertheless, it was the Romanian who held the very first one to close the set (6-4). Sara tried to rush ahead (4-2) to tie the match in the secondo set but found herself tamed in a 3-5 disadvantage due to a false step. Still, she found the strength to fight once more, get a break back and save 2 match points. It wasn’t enough thought.

Overall, it was a good tournament for Sara, who beat the world’s n.9 Aga Radwanska.
