Great victory on Roland Garros’ Court 1 for Sarita that earns her the 4th consecutive last-16 round in Paris!
After the ups and downs of the first two rounds Sara was expected to face a major challenge against the 10th-seeded Andrea Petkovic today and she didn’t fail: that is exactly in the toughest match on paper that Sara made every effort and displayed her best tennis along with her unique atlethicism.
Already in the zone from the start, it only took 4 games to cast a more and more nervous Petkovic aside. After a quick study Sarita was able to break her serve in the fifth game and finish the set with authority. Another key test passed with the highest honours in the second set, even when a questionable call on the left longline at 4-1 was about to jeopardize her lead: the German set up a fight for a comeback until a 4-4 tie but Sara still didn’t let her get on her nerves and finished the business unmercifully.
Great win and sweet payback over the same Andrea Petkovic who blocked Sara’s road to the final in last year’s quartefinals here in Paris. Final score today: 6-3, 6-3.
“I feel like I am positively progressing compared to first rounds here: I have got better sensations both physically and technically. I am eager to gain more because I really care about Roland Garros’ results. It was tough today, we had been close during the whole match, probably because we had similar ranking as well over the past few years. It was a sweet tug-of-war, I hope to continue this way.“
Another German awaits Sara in the next round – Julia Goerges – the one who defeated Caroline Wozniacki previously in the tournament. Match records between the two state a tie, even thought Sara won their last meeting on clay (Barcellona 2012 – 6-2, 6-3).
