Australian Open 2011: (Mixed) doubles

After losing in the first round of singles, Sara has also lost in the first round in doubles. She and Roberta Vinci lost in a tright match to 4th seeds Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez: 7-5, 4-6, 4-6.

However, the Australian Open is not over yet for Sara, as she got into the mixed doubles draw. She is partnering Spaniard David Marrero, and they got in the draw at the last moment, as 7th seeds Benesova/Dlouhy withdrew, and they got to take their spot. In the first round, Sara and David beat the Australian couple Jarmila and Sam Groth 7-6, 6-3. In the second round, they will play Rodionova/Bhupati.

I think it’s a good idea for Sara to play mixed here. It’s the first time in her career she does that, but Italy is playing Fed Cup in Australia the week after the Australian Open, so assuming Sara is on the team, she has to stay in Australia until that weekend. Playing mixed doubles is a good way to play a little more until that time, instead of only practising.
