Fed Cup 2012: Knee injury against Ukraine

Italy is through to the semifinal of the Fed Cup after beating Ukraine 3-2, but unfortunately Sara had to retire from her match today. Early in the match she sustained a knee injury, and at 1-6, 0-3 down against Tsurenko, this forced her to retire.

She said about the injury:

At the end of the first set I felt a sharp pain in my knee. From the beginning of the match I didn’t find the right support in the field. I don’t remember the precise circumstances of the accident well, perhaps it was a lateral movement. The situation has improved but not for long. At the beginning of the second set I felt pain again.”

“I‘m a little scared, because I don’t know this kind of pathology. Even though the doctor reassured me a little, I’m still worried…”

The doctor of the Federation said it’s a problem with the disk compression meniscus in Sara’s right knee, and the situation is stable now. The knee is not swollen, and Sara can even walk almost normally. Tomorrow she will get an MRI to be sure the injury is not serious.
