What a pity today on Court 1 of the Aegon International in Eastbourne. Sara had the chance to get through last-16 round but lost a very close battle after over 2 hours of play. Just right after the struggled victory over the Czech Barbora Strycova, the n.1 of Italy tried to stay into the English Premier draw and continue her first winning streak on grass in the last 2 years.
Daria Gavrilova showed up on court with the intention of not being late for dinner but Sarita was “hungry” as well. In fact, even with a poor first set performance, the Italian managed to turn the match upside down taking a 4-games lead in the second. The Moscow-born – later naturalized Aussie citizen – made every effort to avoid third set but failed due to Sara’s tactician skills: a more aggressive tennis based on anticipation and net shots granted her enough time to force Gavrilova into more unforced errors.
Unfortunately, thanks to a few clashes won and a couple of lucky points the WTA’s n.41 pull out the win. Final score: 1-6, 7-5, 1-6.
Sara will rest a bit before leaving East Sussex for the City and the Championships. The All England Tennis Lawn Club and Wimbledon can not wait to have their Career Grand Slam champion back on court!
