The first WTA tournament on grass is finally on: this week our Sara Errani will play at the English Premier Aegon International in Eastbourne!
She is back after last year’s loss against the American Lauren Davis ((5)6-7, 2-6) and will meet the Czech Barbora Strycova in the second round, as n.13 seed of the main draw she has been accredited with a early bye.
Altough grass is notoriously not Sara’s favourite surface to play on due to her type of game and mobility limits, yesterday’s match started with the best intentions. In the first set the Italian grabbed a decisive break within the fifth game and securely rushed to get the first point in the score board. It seemed it could be a quick match after all, but Strycova had other plans: first she took the lead with a break at 3-3, then she bit the bullet when Sara made her comeback and lastly she nailed the tie-break. Let us start from scratch again.
A nightmare-like get-go in the final set, where Sara was still down of a break at 2-4. Fortunately it is not the surface that makes the champion, that is why the n.1 player of Italy got immediately her grip back and scored a splendid remontada. Final score: 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-6(7).
In the last-16 round Sara will face the baby Australian Daria Gavrilova – WTA’s n.41 – winner of a long clash against Camila Giorgi, ended with a 3-sets victory (3-6, 7-6(6), 6-3). There is no previous match record between the two.
