Charleston 2015: Quarterfinals

charleston 2015

Unfortunately Sara wasn’t able to improve her previous results here in Charleston to pass through Family Circle Cup’s quartefinal. This time it was Lucie Hradecka, taking revenge on Acapulco’s first round played just few weeks ago.

Sara got to quartefinals meeting after a 3-sets victory over the Spanish rookie Sara Sorribes Tormo: first set in control thanks to a break in the 4th game and a splendid advantage management, 6-2. Serve has not been a factor in the second set until Sara managed to hold hers after 4 consecutive ones. Everything seemed to be set for Sara if it wasn’t for a couple of unforced errors combined with the Spanish’s resilience (5-5). Finally, Cichi didn’t react in time to stop Sorribes Tormo’s comeback to tie the match: 5-7.

The Spanish couldn’t keep up with the pace thought. Starting from the Qualyfing draw instead of the main may cost you a lot of energies, especially when it comes to late rounds such as the third one. That is the reason why Sara had the chance to take advantage of her opponent’s condition to get back on track and close the match as soon as possible with a double break, 5-1. A double fault on the match-point for the final score to be announced by the umpire:  6-2.

Not a very pleasant surprise in the next round, where the full-two-handed Czech Lucie Hradecka transformed into the type of tricky and young basher player who always challenges Sara’s game.

Cichi immediately tried to raise her voice with a early break and a 2-0 lead, unfortunately Hradecka needed a single snap to turn the match upside down:  Sara kept missing other break chances so she could start pushing every ball even harder than before. Even during coaching-on-court Sara admitted to Pablo Lozano she couldn’t handle such power. The first set was gone 6 consecutive flash games after.

Sara put her best tactics and tennis intelligence on court to fight back at the beginning of the second set, stroking short and tight crosses to avoid Hradecka’s power shots. Unfortunately the two-handed found her way using brute strength once again, and Sara could not contain it anymore.

Enough with the States for now, Sara will be headed back to Europe where – before taking it to clay regular tournaments – she is expected by coach Barazzutti for the Federation Cup Group I rubber match in Brindisi against the stars-and-stripes team.
