US Open 2012: #1 and quarterfinals!

It’s been a really good day for Sara in New York. First of all, last night, she and Roberta made the quarterfinal in the doubles tournament, by beating Mattek-Sands and Mirza in a very tight and exciting match: 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 (after having matchpoints in the second set already). In the quarterfinal they will play against Goerges/Peschke. Because of this win, and because Huber/Raymond lost in the third round, Sara is the next #1 in doubles! Unfortunately, Roberta will officially be #2, but they have the same amount of points, and they have gotten all their relevant results together. This is a great reward for the amazing year the girls are having. It started with the final at the Australian Open, then a 25-matches winning streak, winning 4 tournaments in a row, including Roland Garros. In total they won 7 titles this year. Sara and Roberta have also officially qualified for the Year End Championships in Istanbul now (for which Sara might also qualify in singles).

In singles, Sara beat Angelique Kerber in the 4th round, to make her 3rd Grand Slam quarterfinal of the year. It was a hardfought match, especially in the first set. Sara went up a break twice, but in the end, she took the set in a tiebreak. In the second set, Sara took an early break, but got broken back for 3-3. In the next servicegame of Kerber, Sara broke again, and served the match out in the next game: 7-6, 6-3.

In the other 4th round in the bottom part of the draw, Roberta Vinci played Agnieszka Radwanska. Before the matches were played, Sara and Roberta said they would love to play each other in the quarterfinal, and it will happen! An all-Italian semifinal between close friends, it will be something special for sure!

There are a few articles on Sara and Roberta’s run to #1, and about Sara’s run in the singles tournament: here, here and here. On federtennis you can watch a video interview with Sara and Roberta after yesterdays match.
