Sara has won her first final of this weekend; she and Roberta Vinci won the doubles title at Roland Garros by beating Kirilenko/Petrova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. With this win, they became the first all-Italian team to win a Grand Slam.
The start of the match was difficult for Sara and Roberta. "We were nervous," said Roberta about this, "it's a Slam final. Also I didn't like the condition of the court and the heavy balls much, with all that rain...". In the middle of the second set, at 3-2 for Sara and Roberta, there was a rain delay, and when the teams came back on the court, the Italian girls played better than before, and they were able to impose their game on Kirilenko and Petrova. In the third set they took an early break, and the victory was never in danger after that.
"Sara was wonderful, phenomenal," commented Roberta after the match, "she played nearly every day for two weeks and she was concentrated and motivated today as well, on the eve of the final against Sharapova. She could also not have given a damn about doubles..."
But Sara did care for the doubles:
"We both wanted this victory, after we lost the final of the Australian Open in january." She didn't want to think about tomorrow's singles final yet: "Now I want to enjoy this success in doubles for a few hours. Then tomorrow morning I will talk about Sharapova with my coach. After all this also relieves the tension, to not have my head at the final already."
